Who do i have to contact to go through my family history?

i'm having trouble just coming up with how to get to someone and how to get to them to go back a few generations, because i love family history... i have information on the past 4 generations before me, but i want to go back a few more. However, going back that far, they lived in the Czech Republic, so wouldn't it be more difficult? my dad's friend is a subscriber to ancestry.com but has to pay a lot annually, and only gets U.S. records, so i dont know how to go international. thanks
